Loy Krathong in Phuket News Feed

Loy Krathong in Phuket

If you find yourself in Phuket in early November, make time in your vacation itinerary to witness the annual Loy Krathong celebrations. Celebrated from November 3-4, it is a time when visitors can enjoy a colourful display of local history, cuisine and culture.

Although the origins of Loy Krathong remain unclear, it is considered one of the most important festivals on the Thai calendar, and during the event almost every body of water in the country comes to life with the light of thousands of glittering candles.

Phuket is one of the most picturesque places to enjoy the festival with floats or “krathongs” hand made and decorated island-wide to be released into the island’s lakes, canals and of course, the ocean. This year’s festivities will also centre around a celebration of the tin mining industry upon which the island built much of its wealth in the 19th and early 20th centuries

The Thai word ‘Loy’ translates as the verb ‘ to float’, while the word ‘krathong’ refers to the small circular rafts which locals decorate with flowers, incense and candles. The principle behind releasing krathongs is that you place all of your troubles into the vessel, and let them float away. Thai people therefore go all out in their efforts to decorate their personalized krathongs, which are often adorned with banana leaves and flowers, and fashioned to accommodate candles and incense sticks.

Places to enjoy the festivities I around Phuket include any of the beaches along the island’s west coast. Nai Harn Lake and Patong Beach tend to attract a mixture of locals and tourists, while locations like Kata and Karon beaches usually draw a generally local crowd. If you are in Phuket Town, festivities are centred around Saphan Hin Park and Suan Luang Park, which attract a good mix of locals and visitors.
