Diving season kicks off on Phuket News Feed

Phuket ushered in the start of its peak diving season recently in true island style with a number of parties and shows by dive equipment suppliers from the Andaman region, including Dive Supply and Aqua Master.

Representatives from other dive suppliers, including Suunto, Scubapro, Bauer Compressors and Intova were also present throughout the revelries to walk divers through the latest equipment developments that have taken place over the low season period.

“This is the only opportunity we have to gather the dive community in big numbers,” Dive Supply’s marketing manager told the Phuket Gazette newspaper. “It was a successful show, we were able to bring everyone together to talk a little business and have a lot of fun.”

The show also marked the launch of new diving equipment designed specifically for women.

“After thorough research and testing, we recognised a gap in the marketplace for dive gear that specifically meets women’s scuba diving needs,” said Michael Wehrle, the Southeast Asia regional manager for Aqua Lung International. “We tapped into the insights of our international team of female divers, water enthusiasts and active individuals who are driven by their passion for the sport of diving,” he added.

Koh Phi Phi and the Similan Islands are widely acknowledged as some of the best dive locations in Thailand’s Andaman region, with the region’s peak season attracting hordes of dive enthusiasts from across the globe.

The Koh Phi Phi archipelago is situated just 25 miles off Phuket, and with its waters protected by Thailand’s National Park System, is home to a colourful array of marine life. Phi Phi’s Maya Bay is a popular destination for beginner divers, with impressive rock formations that plunge to depths of 60 feet below sea level.

Situated 50km west of Kaoh Lak, Thailand’s Similan Islands have been rated among the world’s top ten diving destinations. The region’s northern dive sites, such as Christmas Point and Breakfast Bend, feature large boulder formations that plummet deep into the sea. In fact, rock formations and underwater swim-throughs characterise many of the diverse dive sites situated in the central Similan area.

However, it is not only spectacular rock formations that continue to attract international scuba divers to the Andaman Sea year after year. During peak season, divers enjoy the chance to see leopard sharks, manta rays, whale sharks and turtles. Leopard sharks are a particular favourite, as they are often found relaxing on the sea bed, so it is fairly easy for divers to approach them.

Divers in search of smaller creatures, head for the shallower reefs off the Similan Islands to swim with Hawksbill and Green Turtles.
