Phuket’s Christmas Cheer News Feed

As Phuket’s peak tourism season approaches, local residents and businesses have been preparing themselves for what they hope will be the best holiday period the island has seen for several years.

Predictions for record arrivals have bolstered confidence across the island and a large number of festive events have been arranged to entertain tourists who visit during the island’s busiest time of year.

Phuket’s “Fun Fest” carnival, ran from December 15-20, an event that marks the official start of the island’s high season.

The carnival is organised by the Patong Municipality, and this year’s programme featured the traditional street parade with participants from government organisations, students and private clubs, as well as local food and craft stalls set up in a local park and plenty of live entertainment with a stage situated on the beach at the end of famous Soi Bangla in Patong.

The event also included activities aimed at promoting environmental protection, including a novel scuba-diving competition on the final day with divers competing to clean up the sea bed. Meanwhile, on the surface of the water, long tail boats and their passengers scooped up rubbish and a public exhibition along Patong Beach reminded visitors to respect the island environment.

With a total invest meant of THB13 million (USD 400,000), the Phuket Fun Fest was expected to generate some THB100 million (USD3 million) in revenue for local businesses.

The Koh Phi Phi archipelago is situated just 25 miles off Phuket, and with its waters protected by Thailand’s National Park System, is home to a colourful array of marine life. Phi Phi’s Maya Bay is a popular destination for beginner divers, with impressive rock formations that plunge to depths of 60 feet below sea level.

Despite the fact that the holiday season has not yet fully started, the island has already welcomed record number of visitors in 2013. According to the Phuket Gazette, figures show that over a million more Chinese tourists visited the island in the third quarter than in the whole of 2012, along with 800,000 more tourists from Asean nations.
